GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Cincinnati Reds’ quest to build a formidable pitching staff is already taking shape in spring training, with young arms like Chase Burns and Rhett Lowder making strong impressions. While it’s still early in the preseason, these pitchers are showcasing the depth the Reds are hoping will propel them to continued success.
Developing Pitching is Key for the Reds
Facing Cleveland Guardians superstar José Ramírez in the Cactus League opener, both Burns and Lowder delivered promising performances. Burns struck out Ramírez on a 98 mph fastball, while Lowder induced a swing and miss with a changeup. These moments highlighted the potential within the Reds’ player development system.
“We understand that for us to compete and be competitive, we’re going to have to develop a lot of our pitching,” said manager Terry Francona. This strategy is central to the Reds’ plans, as they aim to build a sustainable rotation through internal growth.
Reds’ Rotation Poised for Improvement
The Reds’ 2025 rotation already ranked fifth in MLB in WAR, built largely through the draft and strategic trades. With continued development, the 2026 rotation is expected to be even stronger, featuring established pitchers like Hunter Greene, Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, and Brad Singer.
“It’s special,” said Abbott. “We can’t take that for granted. A lot of teams don’t have that. We know those guys can compete with the best of the best. It’s an amazing feeling to know they’re in reserve at the moment.”
Burns and Lowder Compete for the Fifth Spot
Burns and Lowder are currently vying for the fifth starter position. Burns, who showcased his velocity and improved changeup against the Guardians, admitted to feeling some jitters in his spring debut. He struck out Steven Kwan with a changeup earlier in the game.
Lowder, returning from elbow and oblique injuries that sidelined him for the 2025 season, pitched like a veteran, locating pitches effectively and demonstrating good movement. He punctuated his performance by striking out Ramírez.
“He pitches like a veteran,” Francona observed. “He had good stuff. He locates. He had good movement. In an era where there’s a lot of grip and rip, he’s a pitcher.”
Veteran Leadership and Advice
Singer emphasized the importance of enjoying the opportunity to compete for a spot on the big league roster. Abbott advised the young pitchers to stay true to themselves and focus on competing.
“Go out there and be yourself,” Singer said. “The only thing you can do is compete and show what you can do. Just enjoy it. You’re in a spot to try to make a big league ball club. That’s a very special spot to be in. Go out there and enjoy it and don’t place too much pressure on yourself.”
“Stay true to yourself. Compete. Be a good teammate and wish everyone the best. Then, just do you. All you can do at the end of the day is go pitch. You can’t control the decisions. Don’t worry about them. Don’t give them too much though. Just go compete.”
Looking Ahead
The battle for the fifth starter position will continue throughout spring training. Francona acknowledged that injuries could also influence the final decision. However, the Reds are confident in the depth of their pitching staff and optimistic about their future success.
