Groundbreaking Heart Stent Procedure Revives 70-Year-Old Patient
A 70-year-old heart disease survivor, Bob Siemer, has undergone a groundbreaking procedure at Christ Hospital, defying previous medical opinions that further heart surgery was impossible. Siemer, who has already survived three open-heart surgeries, is now considered a “walking miracle” thanks to a novel approach pioneered by Dr. Jared Frizzell.
A History of Heart Challenges
Siemer’s heart problems began at age 49, leading to his first open-heart surgery 15 years later. A subsequent surgery was required when his replacement valve wore out. He then developed endocarditis, a serious heart infection, bringing him close to death. His third open-heart surgery was complicated, leaving him without a functioning artery to one side of his heart.
“I was lucky to be alive after that. Lost my leg and lost some toes on the other foot,” Siemer said.
Innovative Stent Procedure Restores Blood Flow
Dr. Jared Frizzell, director of Complex Corner Therapeutics at Christ Hospital, faced a unique challenge. The bypass graft intended to restore blood flow had become disconnected and blocked – 99% blocked in a branch vessel. Rather than another open-chest surgery, Dr. Frizzell devised a less invasive solution.
“So what I did was I took a wire and I went down this graph that was open back up this way and into this stump,” Dr. Frizzell explained. Using a stent procedure and a technique called electrocautery, he was able to cut through scar tissue and create a pathway for blood to flow normally to Siemer’s heart.
“For people that have been told there’s no options, there’s nothing we can do… we’ve got ways around that,” Dr. Frizzell stated.
Remarkable Recovery and Future Implications
Siemer’s recovery has been remarkable. Just one week after the procedure, he was able to resume hiking. The case has been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, highlighting the potential of this innovative technique for patients with limited options.
