El Coyote Mexican Restaurant Celebrates 95 Years in Los Angeles
A Los Angeles institution, El Coyote Mexican Restaurant, is celebrating its 95th anniversary this week. The Fairfax District restaurant, which opened in 1931, has served generations of Angelenos and attracted a clientele of celebrities and Hollywood figures.
A History Steeped in Hollywood Glamour
El Coyote’s walls display autographed portraits of famous patrons, including John Wayne, Princess Grace, and Prince Rainier of Monaco. More recently, the restaurant gained renewed recognition for its appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s film, “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood.”
Family Ownership and Tradition
The restaurant has remained family-owned throughout its history, currently operating under its third generation of owners. Margie Christoffersen, the current owner, reflects on the dedication of her family: “It was their passion, it was their heart, it was their everything, and they gave it everything. And I think that’s why we’re still here.”
Anniversary Celebration
To thank its customers, El Coyote offered a special anniversary deal on Thursday, March 5, 2026: a taco or enchilada with rice and beans for 95 cents.
A Landmark with a Complex Past
El Coyote also holds a somber place in Hollywood history. In 1969, Sharon Tate and her friends dined at El Coyote shortly before the tragic events at Cielo Drive. The restaurant is remembered as the location of their last meal, and a booth is still sought after by those wishing to commemorate the event. Resy notes that the restaurant became tied to one of Hollywood’s most infamous stories.
The restaurant originally opened on 1st Street before moving to its current location in 1951. The Los Angeles Beat describes El Coyote as known for its strong margaritas and kitschy décor.
