If you’re expecting subtlety from Maynard James Keenan, you probably haven’t been paying attention.
Keenan’s long-running project Puscifer has always mixed social observation, satire, and strange characters into something closer to performance art than a traditional rock band. Their latest album, Normal Isn’t, continues that tradition — only this time the commentary feels a little sharper. “You kind of write what you know and write what you see,” Keenan says. “And we’re definitely tuned in to what’s happening in the world… maybe the frustration is coming out a little bit.”
That frustration runs throughout the album….
