Gamers Embrace AI NPCs: New Research Highlights Positive Experiences
A new study from the University of Bristol, conducted in collaboration with developer Meaning Machine, reveals a strong positive correlation between player engagement and the increasingly sophisticated AI powering non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games. The findings suggest that players are not only enjoying interactions with AI NPCs but also finding them rewarding and conducive to self-expression.
The Dead Meat Study: A Deep Dive into Player Interaction
The research centered around Meaning Machine’s murder mystery game, Dead Meat, where players seize on the role of an interrogator questioning AI-driven suspects. The study involved 68 participants – an even split of 31 male and 31 female players, alongside seven individuals who identify as non-binary. Results showed that 95% of players reported an enjoyable experience, and 97% found the gameplay rewarding [1].
Freedom of Expression and Meaningful Choices
Beyond simple enjoyment, the study highlighted a key benefit of these AI interactions: self-expression. A significant 75% of players felt Dead Meat allowed them to express themselves and develop meaningful choices [1]. One participant shared, “I did discover it really rewarding, just like making my own questions up for once,” underscoring the potential for AI NPCs to move beyond scripted responses and offer truly dynamic interactions [1].
The Double-Edged Sword of Freedom
However, the research also acknowledged a potential drawback: the freedom offered by these AI systems can be overwhelming. Players sometimes struggled with the lack of clear direction, finding the open-ended nature of the interactions both exhilarating and daunting. As one player noted, “The freedom can be very exhilarating at first, and it feels immersive, and it feels cool. And it can also perceive overwhelming” [1].
Industry Perspectives on AI in Gaming
Dr. Richard Cole, the project’s lead researcher at the University of Bristol, emphasized the importance of understanding player perspectives. “This research helps to ground what is otherwise quite an emotionally charged debate about AI in games,” he stated. “It does this by putting the player at the heart of the debate – asking what they feel about AI-powered experiences in practice, not just in theory” [4].
Thomas Keane, co-founder of Meaning Machine, added that players react negatively to AI that stifles creativity but embrace AI that enables new interactive experiences. “Players kick back at AI that is taking away from creativity. But when AI is used to power totally new types of interactive experience, then it’s a very different story” [4].
Meaning Machine and the Future of Authored AI
Meaning Machine is known for its “bully method” and Authored AI
technology, which aims to give human authors creative control over AI-driven narratives. The company’s upcoming game, Dead Meat, is set to release on Steam in 2026 [2]. Researchers are also conducting a similar analysis of player responses to Meaning Machine’s more recent title, Blood Will Out, which utilizes a more advanced version of the studio’s technology.
Game Conscious
Technology and Player Studies
The player study was part of the Game Conscious
Characters project, a collaborative research and development project funded by MyWorld and led by Meaning Machine in collaboration with the University of Bristol [1]. The study aimed to understand player responses to the infinite responsiveness of Dead Meat’s characters, which allow players to co-author the game. Dr. Chris Bevan, who co-ran the study, noted the unprecedented level of participant interest, stating, “in 20-odd years of running audience studies, I’ve not seen a response quite like this” [1].
