Düsseldorf (dpa) – Nicole Büttner, the General Secretary of Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP), followed through on a pre-election pledge and shaved her head after the party’s disappointing results in the Baden-Württemberg state election. Büttner presented her new look on Instagram on Sunday, stating, “I made this bet, I lost it, and that’s why I’m cashing it in,” and emphasizing her commitment to honoring her word.
The Bet and the Election Outcome
The wager stemmed from Büttner’s January statement to the “Schwäbische Zeitung” where she declared she would shave her head if the FDP failed to regain entry into the Baden-Württemberg state parliament. The FDP did not surpass the 5% threshold required for representation, receiving only 4.4% of the vote, according to preliminary results from the state’s electoral commission. This outcome marks a setback for the party, which previously held a coalition position in Germany and recently fell short of the 5% threshold in the national election as well.
Who is Nicole Büttner?
Nicole Büttner-Thiel, born in 1985 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, is a German-Jamaican-Swiss entrepreneur and politician. She has served as the General Secretary of the FDP since May 2025. Büttner holds German and Jamaican citizenship, and has also acquired Swiss citizenship, residing in Cham ZG with her family. She is the founder and CEO of Merantix Momentum, an artificial intelligence company, and also serves on the board of the AI company Merantix. Büttner is a jurist and investor on the Swiss television present “Die Höhle der Löwen” (Lion’s Den), starting in 2023. She was also a co-founder of the AI House Davos at the World Economic Forum and played a role in establishing the data institute for the German Startup Association.
