MotoGP Brazil: Circuit Issues and Race Distance Reduced Following FIM Investigation
The recent MotoGP Grand Prix in Brazil, marking the sport’s return to the country, was marred by circuit issues that led to a shortened race distance and prompted an investigation by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The event, held at the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia – Ayrton Senna, experienced challenges stemming from track degradation and unexpected infrastructure problems.
Circuit Problems Disrupt Weekend
The MotoGP weekend in Goiânia was not without its difficulties. A significant defect appeared on the track during Saturday’s Sprint race due to the collapse of an undocumented underground sewage system. While the issue was located outside the ideal racing line, it necessitated repairs and a delay to the Sprint session.
Further complications arose on Sunday before the Grand Prix. Localized asphalt degradation, attributed to high temperatures and intense track activity following the Moto2 race, became apparent. Despite efforts to remove loose aggregate, concerns about continued surface deterioration led race management to reduce the MotoGP Grand Prix to 23 laps – 75% of the originally scheduled distance. Teams were informed of this change by IRTA staff prior to the race start.
FIM Statement on Track Conditions
The FIM released a statement acknowledging the problems encountered during the Brazilian Grand Prix. The statement detailed that investigations into the causes of the issues were jointly conducted by the circuit and the race promoter. The exceptional rainfall experienced during the finishing works was identified as a contributing factor to the surface degradation.
The FIM confirmed that the circuit approval process for MotoGP events begins over a year in advance and includes detailed inspections of all construction areas. The selection of asphalt mixes and laying procedures is determined by the circuit and must be submitted to the FIM for safety compliance verification. Homologation is then confirmed shortly before each Grand Prix.
Future Improvements Planned
Both the promoter and the circuit have acknowledged the issues and committed to resolving them before the next MotoGP event in Brazil. The FIM statement indicated that these improvements will be implemented to ensure the safety and quality of future races at the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia – Ayrton Senna.
Diogo Moreira’s Home Race
The Brazilian Grand Prix held particular significance as the home race for MotoGP rookie Diogo Moreira, the 2025 Moto2 World Champion and the first Brazilian to win a championship in any class of Grand Prix racing. Moreira, riding for Pro Honda LCR, experienced an emotional homecoming and continued to gain experience in his debut premier class season.
