Amsterdam ATMs Targeted in Recent Explosive Attacks, Geldmaat Responds with Closures
Amsterdam and surrounding areas have experienced a surge in ATM bombings in recent weeks, prompting security measures from Geldmaat, the largest ATM provider in the Netherlands. The attacks, focused on ATMs used for business deposits, have led to temporary closures and limited opening hours at various locations.
Recent ATM Explosions and Injuries
Within the past two weeks, six ATMs have been targeted by explosives in and around Amsterdam, according to Dutch news outlet Parool. A recent explosion on Slotermeerlaan in Nieuw-West resulted in injuries to a local resident who was struck by glass shards and required hospital treatment, AT5 reports. Another incident occurred on Sloterkade earlier in the week.
Focus on ‘Sealbag’ ATMs
All of the recent ATM bombings have targeted “sealbagautomaten,” which are used by businesses to deposit cash. Geldmaat has confirmed that some of these attacks resulted in a (limited) financial loss.
Geldmaat’s Response: Closures and Limited Hours
In response to the escalating threat, Geldmaat has taken immediate action to enhance security. All business deposit ATMs located under or next to residential buildings have been temporarily closed. BNR News reports that Geldmaat is also closing deposit locations without residential buildings nearby, starting at 2:00 PM local time.
“We regret this, but safety comes before convenience,” stated Joost den Heyer of Geldmaat, as reported by AT5. The closures are temporary, with no confirmed date for reopening. Geldmaat is currently in discussions with the police to develop long-term security solutions.
Broader Trend of ATM Explosions
While ATM explosions had decreased in recent years, the recent surge in attacks suggests a resurgence of this criminal activity. Parool notes that criminals appear to have identified a vulnerability in the security of these machines.
NU.nl also reports that Geldmaat is limiting the opening hours of some ATMs as part of the security measures.
