Apple VP talks new iPad mini: OLED without ProMotion, Acoustic Display, more

Apple has announced its largest update ever for the iPad mini, introducing a thinner, lighter design and an OLED panel starting at $699 in the US and Rs 82,900 in India. Dave Pakula, Apple's vice-president of hardware engineering, discussed the device in recent interviews, highlighting the OLED screen's faster pixel response and the introduction of an Acoustic Display speaker system. Despite receiving an OLED screen, an A20 Pro chip, an IP67 rating, and updated connectivity, the eighth-generation tablet lacks ProMotion support, capping its refresh rate at 60Hz instead of 120Hz.

  1. Apple VP Addresses New OLED iPad Mini and 60Hz Limit

    Why it matters

The inclusion of an OLED panel brings deeper blacks and higher contrast to Apple's smallest tablet alongside the A20 Pro chip. However, the decision to omit 120Hz ProMotion has drawn scrutiny from reviewers and users expecting high-end display fluidity at the $699 starting price point. Apple executive commentary on the hardware has brought attention to the screen-as-speaker technology while leaving the refresh rate ceiling unexplained.
