Putin salutes Musk's genius as Russia plays catch-up with Starlink
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a real genius on Wednesday, acknowledging that Moscow is currently working to develop its own satellite internet network to rival Starlink. Putin stated that Russia is coordinating with Musk on satellites. This development is particularly striking because Ukraine's military has relied heavily on SpaceX's Starlink system for battlefield communications and drone operations throughout the ongoing conflict with Russia. Putin made the remarks as Russia trails behind the technological capabilities established by Musk's orbital internet constellation, prompting Moscow to pursue its own comparable space-based infrastructure.

Putin Praises Elon Musk as Russia Attempts to Match Starlink
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a real genius on Wednesday, acknowledging that Moscow is currently working to develop its own satellite internet network to rival Starlink. Putin stated that Russia is coordinating with Musk on satellites. This development is particularly striking because Ukraine's military has relied heavily on SpaceX's Starlink system for battlefield communications and drone operations throughout the ongoing conflict with Russia. Why it matters
The public praise from the Kremlin highlights a fascinating geopolitical irony given the wartime utility of Starlink for Ukrainian forces. While Moscow develops its own orbital network, recognizing the technological achievement of Musk underscores the competitive pressure private aerospace companies exert on state military communications. Observers note that Russia's admission of playing catch-up reveals strategic vulnerabilities in its current satellite infrastructure.
