Holyhead Port Closure Causes Festive Disruption, Talks Await
Ferry Services Disrupted
All ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead are currently suspended, leaving passengers stranded and freight shipments delayed. The port is not expected to reopen until at least January 15th.
Leaders Address the Crisis
Taoiseach Simon Harris held a phone conversation with Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan on Friday to address the ongoing situation. The leaders acknowledged the disruption caused to both people and businesses and emphasized their shared dedication to restoring port capacity as swiftly as possible.
Supply Chain Concerns and Workable Solutions
The conversation highlighted the crucial role Holyhead port plays in maintaining vital supply chains. Both leaders stressed the need to identify alternative solutions while the port remains closed. Mr. Harris stated, “The closure of Holyhead port has caused a lot of heartache and disruption for people and traders this Christmas,”
He continued, “We discussed the importance to both Wales and Ireland of ensuring sufficient port capacity to support vital supply chains between Ireland and the UK, and the need to find workable alternatives for as long as Holyhead remains out of commission.”
Looking Ahead
The leaders agreed to reconvene in early January to review progress and assess the situation further.
