Syria Set to Resume International Flights to Damascus, Qatar Airways Makes First Move
Damascus, Syria — Syria has announced a significant step in its post-conflict recovery: it will commence international flights to Damascus starting next week. The Civil Aviation Authority’s general director, Ašhads as Salibi, confirmed the development in a recent statement.
"From Monday, we will begin accepting international flights to Damascus International Airport," Salibi said. He also assured Arab and international airlines that they can expect a smoother process, as Syria has initiated repair and renovation works on Aleppo and Damascus airports with the help of strategic partners.
The resumption of international flights coincides with the arrival of international humanitarian aid aircraft and diplomatic delegations in Syria. Domestic flights have also resumed, marking a return to normalcy for the war-torn country.
Qatar Airways, one of the leading international carriers, has announced that it will restart flights to Damascus after a hiatus of nearly 13 years. The first flight is scheduled for next Tuesday, with three weekly services planned initially.
This move aligns with Qatar’s commitment to Syria’s reconstruction efforts. In a previous statement, a Qatari official expressed Doha’s willingness to assist the new Syrian authorities in restarting operations at Damascus International Airport.
The resumption of international flights signals a major stride in Syria’s efforts to reintegrate into the global community. It is expected to boost the country’s tourism and economic sectors, further aiding its post-war recovery.
