The research indicates that in 2024, over 20% of private sector employees engaged in distance work at least monthly, typically adopting a hybrid model averaging two days of telework each week.

From Exception to Expectation: The Telework Trajectory

Before the COVID-19 pandemic,telework was a rarity in France. In 2019, only 4% of employees regularly worked remotely. The pandemic dramatically altered this landscape, with telework rates peaking at 30% during the confinements of 2020.While the initial surge has subsided, telework remains prevalent, with approximately 22% of employees working remotely in 2024, averaging about 1.9 days per week.

Disparities in Access: Sectoral and Socio-Professional Divides

The adoption of telework varies significantly across sectors and professions. It is most common among executives (63%) and in industries like details-interaction (75%) and financial services (60%). Conversely, telework remains limited in sectors requiring physical presence, such as accommodation-restaurant services. furthermore, large companies exhibit higher telework rates (34%) compared to small and medium-sized businesses (18%), likely due to their organizational structure and the nature of available positions.

Key Factors Influencing Telework Adoption

Several factors contribute to the adoption of telework. Beyond the size of the business, an employee’s socio-professional category and housing conditions play crucial roles. As a notable example, employees residing over 100 km from their workplace are 12.2 percentage points more likely to telework than those living within 5 km. additionally, women are 6.4 percentage points more likely to work remotely than men.

Formalizing Telework: The Role of Company Agreements

The formalization of telework through company agreements has accelerated. in 2022,4% of agreements addressed telework,compared to less than 1% in 2017. Nearly half of these agreements are now signed for an indefinite period, indicating the entrenchment of this practice.Most recent agreements stipulate up to two days of telework per week, reflecting a trend towards balance between remote work and on-site presence.

Persistent Inequalities: Challenges and Considerations

Despite the widespread adoption of telework, inequalities persist. Beginners and older employees are less likely to telework than those with intermediate seniority. Telework is also less accessible to employees in low qualification positions, perhaps exacerbating existing social disparities. Companies must address these disparities to ensure equitable access to telework opportunities.
