Accusations of Terrorism and Insulting the President

Joakim Medin, a Swedish journalist, has been apprehended in istanbul and formally accused by the Turkish government of “terrorism” and “insulting the president,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The arrest has sparked international concern and raised questions about press freedom in Turkey.

According to a statement from the Turkish government’s disinformation centre, Medin was taken into custody upon arrival at Istanbul airport on March 27, 2025, and subsequently imprisoned the following day. The charges stem from alleged “membership in an armed terrorist association” and “insulting the president.”

Turkish Government Defends Arrest, Cites PKK Affiliations

Turkish authorities maintain that Medin’s arrest is unrelated to his journalistic work. They claim he participated in a demonstration organized by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in stockholm. The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey and several Western allies, including the United States and the European Union.

Specifically, Medin is accused of participating in a January 11, 2023, demonstration in Stockholm organized by PKK/KCK supporters, during which a puppet resembling president Erdogan was burned. The Attorney General’s Office reportedly initiated an investigation into the incident on January 13, 2023, naming Medin as one of fifteen suspects.

Broader Crackdown on Journalists in Turkey

Medin is also accused of “facilitating contacts between the terrorist organization PKK/KCK and the press.” This arrest occurs amidst a backdrop of increasing pressure on journalists in Turkey. Since the arrest of istanbul Mayor and opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu on March 19, ther have been reports of a BBC journalist being expelled and at least ten turkish journalists being detained.this pattern raises concerns about the state of press freedom and the government’s tolerance of dissent.

The arrest of Imamoglu, in particular, has triggered widespread protests across Turkey, with hundreds of thousands of people demanding his release. This unrest underscores the growing political tensions within the country.

International Condemnation and Calls for Release

Andreas Gustavsson, the chief editor of Dagens etc, the Swedish newspaper employing Medin, has denounced the accusations as “absurd.” He stated, Exercising journalism should not be a crime, the facts are not an insult.

The Swedish Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stengard, has declared Medin’s release an “absolute priority” for the Swedish government.The case is likely to further strain relations between Sweden and Turkey, particularly as Sweden seeks to join NATO, a process that requires Turkey’s approval.

The Commitee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has consistently criticized Turkey’s treatment of journalists. In its 2024 report, the CPJ noted that Turkey remains one of the world’s leading jailers of journalists, often using anti-terrorism laws to silence critical voices.
