MEPs voted for the abolition of Grazulis’ legal immunity, concluding that there is no evidence that Lithuanian law enforcement agencies would try to restrict his work, express or vote.
At the end of April, the EP Legal Committee recommended that Members support the abolition of Grazulis’ legal immunity.
The EP case of Grazul, who was elected last year, began to be discussed in October after Lithuanian Attorney General Nida Grunskiene asked the EP to revoke the legal immunity to Gražulis in a case of disrespect for sexual minorities in September.
Grazulis in Lithuania is accused of public ridicule and contempt for a group of persons or a person’s sexual orientation. The Lithuanian Criminal Code provides for a penalty, restriction or imprisonment of up to two years in prison.
On May 26, 2022, after the Lithuanian Parliament initially supported the Civil Union’s bill, which legalizes same -sex union, Grazulis, from leaving the plenary hall and meeting several representatives of the LGBTQ community, called them degenerates distributing sexually transmitted diseases.
Evidence collected in the investigation shows that Grazulis acted directly intentionally, knowing that his statements would be recorded, transmitted and reflected in the media.
Five persons have been recognized as victims in this investigation.
It has already been reported that in 2023 the Constitutional Court ruled that Grazulis had violated the Constitution and broke the oath of a deputy, deliberately voting on another Member of the Seimas when he did not see it. Based on this judgment, his mandate of the Seimas deputy was canceled in an impeachment procedure.
Previously, the court found Grazuli guilty in the interest of the corruption case for the operation of the frozen product manufacturer “Judex”.
