New Tech Reporting Fellowship Launched by openDemocracy and Tech Policy Press
openDemocracy and Tech Policy Press have announced a new fellowship program aimed at bolstering investigative journalism focused on the intersection of technology and society in the United Kingdom. The inaugural fellow, Jade-Ruyu Yan, an investigative journalist from Hong Kong specializing in corporate influence, will contribute reporting to both organizations over the next 12 months.
Cross-Newsroom Collaboration
The fellowship represents a collaborative effort between two non-profit media organizations. Yan will be embedded within openDemocracy’s investigative team in the UK, while also benefiting from the expertise of Tech Policy Press’s editors based in the US and Europe. This partnership seeks to address the challenges faced by smaller newsrooms in investigating the global impact of technology.
Addressing the Challenges of Tech Reporting
According to openDemocracy’s editor-in-chief, Aman Sethi, the tech industry’s complex structure and geographic distribution pose unique difficulties for investigative reporting. “The tech industry’s corporate consolidation and dispersed and uneven geographic footprint present a unique challenge for small newsrooms looking to investigate how technology affects societies around the world,” Sethi stated. The fellowship is designed to pool resources and expertise to overcome these obstacles.
Focus on UK Tech Policy with Global Implications
Tech Policy Press’s senior editor, Ramsha Jahangir, emphasized the importance of the UK’s role in shaping global tech policy. “As policymakers in the UK confront the growing concentration of power in the technology sector, their decisions are sending signals that resonate globally,” Jahangir said. The fellowship aims to provide clear, in-depth, and internationally-focused reporting on these developments.
Investigative Focus
Jade-Ruyu Yan, the fellow, expressed her commitment to uncovering the often-hidden aspects of the tech industry. “There’s a lot of PR and behind-the-scenes action going on with these tech developments,” Yan commented. “I’m looking forward to digging in with a great team to give people the information they need, so that we can all ask the right questions of the UK government and companies.”
