Putin Dares Zelensky to Nuclear Duel, Sparks Fury with ‘Interesting’ War Comments
Russian President Vladimir Putin reignited tensions with Ukraine this week, provoking President Volodymyr Zelensky with a chilling nuclear threat and dismissing the ongoing war as a mere source of "interesting" action. Putin sent shockwaves during his annual year-end press conference, describing Russia’s new nuclear-capable "Oreshnik" ballistic missile and suggesting a "technological duel" against Kyiv.
Nuclear Threat and a "Technological Duel"
Putin specifically challenged Ukraine to engage in a test of its air defense systems by targeting Kyiv with the Oreshnik. He stated, “Let them propose … some kind of technological experiment – a kind of high-tech duel of the 21st century, let’s say… and we will strike there with the Oreshnik. And we’ll see what happens.”
This provocative statement was met with immediate and furious condemnation, with Zelensky dismissing Putin’s rhetoric as absurd.
Zelensky posted an excerpt of those remarks on X, commenting in English: “People are dying, and he thinks it’s ‘interesting’… Dumbass.”
He also posted a similar comment in Ukrainian.
Putin’s Dismissive View of War
Adding further fuel to the fire, Putin seemed to downplay the ongoing conflict, describing the friction as a necessary source of "action" and excitement. He stated, "You know, when everything is calm, measured, stable, you get bored. Stagnation . You need some action. As soon as the action starts, everything whizzes past your head: seconds, bullets. Unfortunately, bullets are whistling now."
This callous disregard for human life further intensified international criticism of Putin’s regime.
Putin Opens Door to Speaking with Trump
Despite global pressure, Putin maintained a defiant stance during the press conference. He did, however, open the door to potential talks with future US President Donald Trump. When asked about meeting Trump, Putin stated, “First of all, I don’t know when we will meet. Because he hasn’t said anything about it. I haven’t spoken to him at all in over four years. Of course, I am ready for this at any time, and I will be ready for a meeting if he wants it.”
The world holds its breath as tensions escalate further. What will be the ramifications of Putin’s provocative statements?
